"Following the death of his mother in 1837 and his father in 1840, he lived with Jabez Thompson (106). He moved in 1845 to Eutaw, Ala. In June, 1846, he enlisted and served for one year in the Mexican War. In 1849 he went to California as a gold seeker, and returned to Eutaw in 1851. In 1852 or 1853 he was elected Sheriff of Greene Co., Ala., and Oct. 1, 1855, was appointed Deputy County Clerk of Greene County."
