      1. [S2655423104] History of Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, Vermilion Historical Society, (Dallas: Taylor Publishing Company, 1983), 214-215.
"Only one child, a boy, was born from this marriage [Jean Louis Francois Marceau and Marguerite Eugenie Dufoix] on March 6, 1781. His name was Francois Desgraviers Marceau, nephew of General Marceau. Later nicknamed 'Francois the American' because he left France to live in America, he settled in the Attakapas Country of Louisiana which includes what are now Lafayette and Vermilion Parishes, and raised cotton. The Marceau name with the 'x' first appears with Francois 'the American.' All of the Marceaux families in Vermilion Parish are direct descendants of 'Francois the American.'

"'Francois the American' married Pelagie Dartes on August 10, 1809, in Saint Martinville, Louisiana. The following seven children were born from this marriage: Pierre Villeret, Virginie, Francois, Auguste, Louisa Zoe, Marguerite Eugenie, and Josephine."
