- His father died a couple of months before he was born. On the 1850 census he is in the same household as his mother's relatives, Grinages and Mercers. His aunt, Mary Grinage, married Raney Mercer, which is probably where the Mercer in his name came from. His uncle, Richard Grinage, was one of the founders of Houma, Louisiana.
- Family legend tells us that A.M. was well educated and was a professor of English. He was a freelance writer and wrote about many different topics. When he began to lose his eyesight to glaucoma he was no longer able to write. He and Anna lived throughout Louisiana and Mississippi teaching school in areas in which they settled. Andrew Mercer Lathrop died in Leeville and was buried at Crosby Cemetery outside the fence because he was not a Catholic. Since then he has been included with the others. The Lathrops were the only Protestant family in the area. (Lathrop reunion booklet)
